Puppies born on 11th August 2015; Sire Upperwood Forest, Dam Upperwood Martha.
Over the last few days there has been a lot of press about the intense inbreeding within certain breeds by British dog breeders (including the English Setters). The figures are of great concern but have not gone unnoticed by some Breeders prior to the Kennel Clubs press release. Here at Upperwood Kennels we have thought that many breeders need to start planning for the future and not just about the next 'Big Winner'. The working English Setters have no concerns at all as they have a huge gene pool across the world, full of quality dogs. But the UK show 'type' English Setter doesn't have this luxury. For this reason we have bred an experimental litter of 0% COI. This means that sire and dam of the litter are not related in any way at all. The father is of pure working bloodlines and mother of pure UK show type lines. The photos you can see are of the litter (4 puppies) taken when the puppies were 6 weeks old. Interesting, prior to this mating 'Martha' had been mated 3 times to 2 different proven stud dogs of UK show type bloodline but never produced any puppies. Obviously only time will tell as to how successful the puppies will become but a lot will depend on how you measure success! |

On the 9th September Dom competed in his last Field Trial of 2015. The trial season finished as it started with another great win but this time with his up and coming youngster Upperwood Clover. The Open Stake was held on the famous Holkham Estate in Norfolk. This was the first time she had run on the partridge stubble fields and it clearly seemed to suit her.
It was hard to imagine that 2015 could be more successful than 2014 but as it turned out it was equally as good if not better as the dogs were competed in fewer trials. Dom ran his dogs in 15 Open Stakes, taking first prize in 5 of the them (with 4 different dogs). 9 out the 15 Open stakes our Upperwood English Setters took 1st, 2nd or 3rd places and only 1 of the Open Stakes did we not get an award at all. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the judges for thinking so highly of our dogs and a special thanks must go to all the fellow competitors and spectators for helping hold dogs and being great sports. The dogs can now 'rest up' and recover from a long hard season on the moors and prepare for the 2016 Field Trial circuit where hopefully a couple of new youngsters can make an appearance. |
17th JULY; FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW THE ENGLISH SETTER BREED STAKE WAS WON BY AN UPPERWOOD ENGLISH SETTER. WHAT WAS MORE MOMENTOUS THIS YEAR WAS THAT WE CAME AWAY WITH 1ST, 2ND AND 3RD. IT WAS ACTUALLY A FULL HOUSE FOR THE KENNEL AS AN UPPERWOOD BRED ENGLISH BITCH TOOK 4TH. 1st FTCH Upperwood No Fly Zone, 2nd FTCHGibeltarik Troy at Upperwood, 3rd Upperwood Forest (all owned and handled by Dom Goutorbe), 4th Upperwood Ash Alert (owned and handled by David Hall).
The GUNS CHOICE award was also very special, as guns could not decide which dog of the 'Upperwood Team' to give it to, so the prize went to all of 'Dom's Dog'. A great day for the Kennel! |
Upperwood Forest, winning the Open Stake of The Southern & Western Counties Field Trial Society Pointer & Setter Field Trial Meeting, 18th April 2015. This was the first open stake Forest had competed in and this made him the 6th Upperwood English Setter to win an open stake in the last 12 months (5 of these dogs were trained and handled by Dom).
